Duration: two weeks
The course will involve both frontal lessons and on field trainings. The training course foresee an introduction on the study and documentation of the selected five sites about the state of preservation and, on the base of the result, the order of interventions will be prepared. During the lessons the students will study and analyse the history of the monuments preserved in the five archaeological areas involved in the project, as well as the history of the restoration interventions in the areas, the study for the backfilling of all or part of the mosaic and the design of other possible methods of protection and prevention of degradation, and finally the study and analysis for restoration interventions on detached mosaics preserved in museum structures.
Moreover, these are the specific activities related to the preservation and protection of the monuments, concerning the on-site interventions: documentation and historical research on the structures; photogrammetry of the structures; study of building technique and materials; study of the state of preservation and of the causes of the degeneration of the architectural materials; study of the ancient and modern interventions on structures and mosaics and discussion on the opportunity of removal; methodology of interventions; planning of the restoration activities; realization of restorations on walls and mosaics in order to preserve the archaeological ruins in the five sites included in the project; graphic and photographic documentation of the restoration activities; planning for the monitoring and maintenance of the restorations.
Frontal lessons: 20 hours (Two weeks, five days each week, two hours by day, ten frontal lessons).
Learning outcomes: the course will provide the student with the knowledge about the recording, the analysis and the management of ancient structures and mosaics, in order to preserve and eventually restore them.
Pre-requisites/terms of reference: basic knowledge of restoration methodologies.
